As part of its year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations and World Bicycle Day 2026 observance, the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) successfully organized Cyclothons in both Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam, promoting cycling as a sustainable, healthy, and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
In Thiruvananthapuram, the 8-km NATPAC Cyclothon 2026, organized under the theme “A Step Towards a Sustainable Future; A Bicycle Ride for a Better Tomorrow”, was flagged off by Shri Chandy Oommen MLA in front of the Secretariat. The programme was later addressed by Shri C. P. John, Hon'ble Minister for Transport, who emphasized the importance of integrating cycling with public transport systems and strengthening first- and last-mile connectivity.
In Ernakulam, a 10-km Cyclothon starting from Rajendra Maidan was flagged off by Sri Antony Painuthara, Chairperson of Welfare Committee, Kochi Municipal Corporation. The event brought together cyclists, students, professionals, and members of the public to advocate for active mobility, safer streets, and sustainable urban transportation.
As part of the Ernakulam programme, NATPAC also released the report “State of Cycling in Kochi – 2026”, which assesses the current status of cycling infrastructure and identifies opportunities for strengthening cycling as an integral component of sustainable urban mobility.
The events highlighted the critical role of cycling in improving public health, reducing emissions, enhancing urban livability, and building climate-resilient transport systems. Both programmes witnessed enthusiastic participation from cycling communities, students, professionals, government officials, and the public.
NATPAC expresses its sincere gratitude to all participants, partners, sponsors, volunteers, government agencies, and cycling groups who contributed to the success of these events.
Together, let us continue pedalling towards safer, healthier, and more sustainable cities.
